North Sea Chapter recognizes Safety Award winners, celebrates achievements
The IADC North Sea Chapter recognized outstanding safety practice at its annual Safety Awards, held at P&J Live in Aberdeen, Scotland, on 21 March. An audience of 460 of the chapter’s primary members, associate members, industry partners and guests gathered to celebrate the following award winners:
- Associate Member Award – Interocean Marine Services. Runner-up – Evolution Hose, a division of Rig Surveys Group
- Best Safety Performance Award: Jackup – Borr Drilling (below 1 million manhours) and Valaris (above 1 million manhours)
- Best Safety Performance Award: Floating Rig – Stena Drilling. Runner-up – Dolphin Drilling
- Best Safety Performance Award: Platform Drilling – Odfjell Technology
- Chairman’s Award for Best Safety Performance: Jackup – Shelf Drilling for the Shelf Winner
- Chairman’s Award for Best Safety Performance: Floating Rig – Stena Drilling for the Stena Don
- Chairman’s Award for Best Safety Performance: Platform Drilling – H&P for the Scott
- Chairman’s Special Award (recognizing an individual making a remarkable contribution to safety) – Tomas Labanauskas, Shelf Drilling.
In addition, the chapter raised over £8,000 for local charity Befriend a Child, while donating £3,000 to the UK Oil and Gas Chaplaincy Trust Fund in memory of the chapter’s former employee Val Hood.
IADC UTP Student Chapter hosts Petronas lecture on wellbore instability
On 12 March, the IADC Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) Student Chapter hosted an exclusive adjunct lecture by Avinash Kishore Kumar, Senior Manager of Well Fluids & Cementing at Petronas, covering wellbore instability.
Mr Kumar provided his perspectives on the challenges of wellbore instability, effective mitigation strategies and best practices in the field.
IADC University of Wyoming Student Chapter hosts Petroleum Simulator Day
On 28 March, the IADC University of Wyoming Student Chapter held a “Petroleum Simulator Day,” where students had the chance to network, collaborate and get hands-on experience with an assortment of simulators. The simulated environments included an offshore drillship, two onshore rigs, a wireline unit and a coiled-tubing unit.
The event was co-hosted with the American Association of Drilling Engineers’ University of Wyoming Student Chapter.

IADC UTPB Student Chapter organizes ‘lunch & learns’
The IADC University of Texas Permian Basin (UTPB) Student Chapter recently held a series of “lunch & learn” sessions:
- The Wireline Group brought a wireline truck to the UTPB campus;
- Welltec presented its downhole technologies;
- Scott Gordon, Principal at Gordon Regulatory Solutions and 2010 IADC Contractor of the Year, talked to students about the drilling industry;
- BP Pump & Supply taught students about artificial lift; and
- DarkVision discussed its work with acoustic imaging technology.
- Students also visited Stage 3 Separation to see the company’s solids control equipment and Jacam Catalyst, a chemicals provider, to observe lab-testing equipment.
